Frequently asked questions.
What is brow mapping and why is it important?
Brow mapping is a structured assessment process used to determine ideal brow placement and shape based on facial proportions and the golden ratio principle that is the foundation for the natural and designed world.
Before shaping begins, we evaluate:
• Natural brow growth pattern
• Facial symmetry
• Eye position and lid structure
• Bone structure and expression dynamics
• Intersection of the golden ratio within existing structure and designed outcomes
This ensures the brow enhances facial balance rather than following temporary trends. The result is refined definition suited to both professional and everyday environments.
How do you determine the right brow shape?
The correct brow shape is guided by structure, not fashion.
We consider:
• Natural density and hair direction
• Arch placement relative to the iris
• Tail length in proportion to facial width
• Brow thickness suited to facial features
Our aim is controlled refinement — maintaining natural integrity while subtly enhancing definition.
What is brow lamination and how does it work?
Brow lamination restructures the natural brow hairs to improve direction, symmetry and fullness. UP® Clinical Cosmetics was the first to introduce this technology to New Zealand and remains a leader in this field. As a result, our stylists are well placed to answer your questions and guide you through what to expect from this treatment.
Brow lamination is particularly suitable for:
• Clients seeking a fuller, lifted appearance
• Downward or irregular hair direction
• Brows with uneven growth patterns
• Sparse areas requiring visual density
Treatment suitability is assessed during consultation to ensure brow hair integrity and skin condition are appropriate.
What is the difference between tint, dye, stain, henna and ULTRALAST™?
Brow colour systems vary in longevity, skin staining depth and suitability.
At UP® Clinical Cosmetics, we offer several structured options:
• Tint – Primarily colours the brow hairs. Provides soft definition and typically lasts 3–4 weeks on the hair, with minimal skin staining.
• Dye or Stain – Colours both hair and the upper layer of skin, creating greater depth and density. Longevity is typically longer than tint, depending on skin type.
• Henna – A plant-based system that stains both the hair and skin more deeply. Henna can provide extended skin definition and often lasts longer than standard dye. Because it is a botanical compound, patch testing is required prior to treatment.
• ULTRALAST™ – Our proprietary brow colour system designed to deliver extended longevity with controlled skin staining and refined tone consistency. ULTRALAST™ can match or exceed the longevity of henna while offering a more predictable fade pattern. Unlike henna, ULTRALAST™ does not require patch testing under standard treatment conditions.
The most appropriate system depends on skin type, desired intensity and maintenance preference. During consultation, we assess suitability and recommend the option that provides the best balance of definition, longevity and safety.
How long do brow treatments last?
Results vary depending on treatment type and individual factors:
• Brow lamination typically lasts 6–8 weeks
• Tint lasts approximately 3–4 weeks on hair
• Henna and ULTRALAST™ treatments typically achieve longer lasting results.
Your stylist will advise a personalised maintenance schedule to retain structure and colour consistency.
For ultimate longevity, your stylist will be happy to discuss microblading and other semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) options with you and arrange a consultation with our expert team.
Are brow treatments safe?
When performed within appropriate protocols, brow treatments are safe for healthy skin and hair.
Our approach includes:
• Skin assessment prior to treatment
• Patch testing where indicated
• Controlled processing times
• Defined hygiene standards
We do not proceed with treatment if there is active irritation, infection or compromised skin or brow integrity.
Who may not be suitable for brow treatments?
Brow treatments may not be appropriate for clients experiencing:
• Active dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis in the brow area
• Recent cosmetic procedures affecting the skin
• Known sensitivity to tinting agents such as henna
• Compromised skin barrier
A consultation ensures treatment suitability and safety.
How do you maintain natural brow health?
We prioritise brow hair integrity by:
• Avoiding over-processing
• Maintaining appropriate processing times
• Advising structured maintenance intervals
• Avoiding unnecessary reshaping
Long-term brow health supports better density, shape retention and consistent results over time.
